Effects of Silicon on Mineral Nutrient Uptake , Growth and Manganese Toxicity of Cucumber Plants in Hydroponics

Abstract
Cucumber plants were grown in Allen Cooper¢¥s nutrient solution to investigate the effect of silicon on manganese toxicity.
The effects of silicon on the manganese toxicity of cucumber plants were summarized as follows:
1. Visible symptoms of manganese toxicity of cucumber plants were observed in lower leaves of Mn 20pprn and Si 0ppm, were but those not observed by Si suppy. The symptoms were observed as brown necrotic spot in leaves and dark red in leaf vein.
2. The diffusion resistance of cucumber leaves was higher at -Si than that of +Si treatment at high Mn level in the solution, but those were little difference at low Mn level. The transpiration rate of cucumber leaves was higher at +Si than -Si treatment at high Mn level, but those were little difference at low Mn level. Numbers of senescent leaves were increased in the supplement with Mn 20ppm, but plants supplied Si were reduced.
3. The uptake of phosphorus in Mn 2ppm was decreased by the addition of silicon, but that of Mn 20ppm treatment were increased by silicon supply. The uptake of calcium was similar to that of phosphorus. SiO©ü content of plant parts were highest at root and in-order of leaf, stem.
4. The growth of cucumber were remarkably increased by added silicic acid at high Mn level. The color of cucumber root at Mn 20ppm become changed into dark brown, but that of Mn 20ppm and +Si was right brown, The yield of cucumber was higher in +Si than -Si treatment.
5. The infection density of powdery mildew and indices of aphid were remarkably decreased by added silicon.
